Tomato 10.JPG
Garden fresh tomatoes and basil with a slice of mozzarella cheese and a splash of extra virgin olive oil. We like to serve the tomato on a slice banquette as an appetizer.

Pumpkin 4.JPG
Two Bottle Pumpkin. This week I put some boards under the pumpkin to keep the worms and what ever from eating the part touching the ground. It is really growing fast and I am just watering on a regular basis. This is not even close to a record pumpkin, but I still find it amazing. I think next weekend I will give it a major jolt of fertilizer.

Early Girl tomatoes are not the heirloom tomatoes that are so special to backyard gardeners. These tomatoes are an everyday treat. I always plant an Early Girl bcause they are the first tomatoes every season and the plant is a big producer. Just as importantly it is an insurance policy to ensure you have a good harvest because they very hearty and disease resistant. The heirlooms are more sensitive to a lot of garden pests. We add these to our grill cheese sandwiches; they are mounded into BLTs, added to salads and just eaten as appetizers. Life is good.

Giant Pumpkins

Pumpkin 2.jpg
The Atlantic pumpkin continues to grow. This should end up around 300 pounds around harvest time during Haloween. For big pumpkins, the experts say that you have to keep the pumpkin at a 90 degree angle to the vine. This vine wanders in and out of a fence and the pumpkin sits next to the fence. The vine does a little twist before attaching to the pumpkin. I still think it will be a giant. What do the experts really know....

Summer Harvest

Harvest.jpg

The Black Krim Tomato heirloom tomato is one of the stars this year. It is the one on the right (Egg Plant in the background with a Lemon Boy in front.) This Russian tomato variety hails from the Isle of Krim (Crimean peninsula) in the Black Sea to the south of the Republic of Ukraine. The sliced Black Krims has a natural salty taste and does not require much sasoning, only a hint of pepper. Yes, they are mis-shapen and some times do look ugly (only to some), and would never make it in a super market. But their taste is exceptional.
